Instagram post dimensions

Instagram photo size

Instagram photography can be square, landscape, or vertical. In your grid view, all images will be shown cropped to a 3:4 aspect ratio.

Instagram will automatically compress your image to save bandwidth, so it’s essential to optimize your image’s quality before uploading.

When you share a photo as a feed post on Instagram with a width between 320 and 1080 pixels, the image is kept at its original resolution as long as its aspect ratio is between 1.91:1 and 3:4 (a height between 566 and 1440 pixels with a width of 1080 pixels). If the aspect ratio of your photo isn't supported, it will be cropped to fit a supported ratio. If you share a photo at a lower resolution, it’s enlarged to a width of 320 pixels. If you share a photo at a higher resolution, it’s sized down to a width of 1080 pixels.

If you want to make sure your photo is shared with a width of 1080 pixels:

Instagram Reels

Instagram Reels are essentially videos uploaded to your Instagram feed. You can upload an Instagram Reel with an aspect ratio between 1.91:1 and 9:16. Reels should have a minimum frame rate of 30 FPS (frames per second) and minimum resolution of 720 pixels.

Instagram recommends a cover photo of 420 x 654 pixels, with a 1:1.55 ratio. You won’t be able to edit the cover photo after you’ve uploaded it, so make sure you get it right!

Instagram Stories specs

Instagram Stories are the vertical posts that disappear 24 hours after you post them, unless you save them to a Highlights collection. Stories should be uploaded in a vertical format with a recommended size of 1080 x 1920 pixels. They should have an aspect ratio of 9:16 to fill the entire screen. The maximum file size for a photo or video is 4 GB. Remember, the top and bottom parts of the image may be cut off if they don’t fit the recommended dimensions, so make sure you keep these guidelines handy!

Instagram video specs

Instagram videos are simply a content format. They can be used in various ways, including feed posts which are automatically converted into Reels, Stories, ads, and more.

Stories have a maximum length of 15 seconds per clip, and the recommended video size is 1080 x 1920 pixels. The recommended video format is MP4 with a maximum file size of 4 GB. Your Instagram Story will auto-play, so it’s important to create engaging content that quickly captures the attention of your audience.

You can also use video in your feed post. These videos are automatically turned into Reels. Reels can be up to a minute and a half long. The minimum resolution is 720 pixels, and they should have a 1.91:1 to 9:16 aspect ratio. Reels should have a minimum of 30 frames per second (FPS) and may be up to 4 GB in size. The cover photo should be 420 x 654 pixels with 1:1.55 aspect ratio.
